American nuclear officials endorse using plutonium from dismantled warheads

Nuclear industry officials have tentatively supported a forthcoming Trump administration plan to make Cold War-era warhead plutonium available to power companies for reactor fuel. This initiative would be similar to the “Megatons to Megawatts” program between the United States and Russia which began after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Donald Trump wants to reconnect with Kim Jong Un

On Monday, President Trump told South Korean President Lee Jae Myung that he would like to rekindle his relationship with his North Korean counterpart. According to Trump: “I will do that, and we’ll have talks. He’d like to meet with me,” and “Kim Jong Un and I had a very great relationship… and still do.” This comes amid renewed efforts by the South Korean government to diplomatically reengage the north.

China urges ‘dialogue’ to resolve Iran nuclear issue

With new U.S. economic sanctions on Iran looming, Chinese Foreign Vice-Minister Ma Zhaoxu stated that China hopes all parties involved in the Iran nuclear issue will “remain committed to resolving the issue through political and diplomatic means and actively create conditions for an early resumption of dialogue and negotiations.”

Trump renews push for ‘denuclearization’ talks with Russia and China

Ahead of his meeting with President Lee of South Korea on Monday, President Trump told reporters “One of the things we’re trying to do with Russia and with China is denuclearization, and it’s very important.” China has since rejected Trump’s proposal, saying “The countries with the largest nuclear arsenal should earnestly fulfil their special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament.”
