American Nuclear Society: Old and Nu

The American Nuclear Society and the University of New Mexico invited students, professionals, and educators, among them Charles Oppenheimer, to the 2025 ANS Student Conference, themed “Old and Nu.” This theme reflected both the historical significance of New Mexico in nuclear development and its ongoing contributions to the field.

New Mexico has long been a central hub for nuclear science, home to Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories and other key institutions. The conference focused on advancing nuclear technologies through student-led research, fostering mentorship between industry veterans and emerging professionals, and shaping public perception by engaging communities in nuclear policy, energy, and science.

Poland’s President OKs $15.5 Billion for First Nuclear Power Station

Poland has taken a significant step toward energy independence and sustainability with the approval of $15.5 billion in funding for its first commercial nuclear power plant in Pomerania. The bill, signed into law by President Andrzej Duda, secures partial funding for the project, with additional financing expected through foreign investment.

A key challenge remains: the European Commission’s approval of Poland’s financial strategy to ensure compliance with EU competition rules. Once approved, the funds will be allocated to the state-owned project company, Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ), which is in advanced negotiations with the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium. The project will feature three AP1000 pressurized water reactors from Westinghouse, with preparatory work expected to begin this year.
